Requirements to Become an IAS Officer
Educational Qualification: A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
Age Limit:
General category: 21 to 32 years.
OBC: 21 to 35 years.
SC/ST: 21 to 37 years.
Additional relaxation for certain categories like PwD.
Number of Attempts:
General: 6 attempts.
OBC: 9 attempts.
SC/ST: Unlimited attempts (within the age limit).
Exam Pattern
The IAS exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has three stages:
Preliminary Exam (Prelims):
Two objective-type papers:
General Studies Paper I (200 marks).
General Studies Paper II (CSAT - 200 marks, qualifying with 33%).
Duration: 2 hours each.
Purpose: Screening for the Mains exam.
Main Exam (Mains):
Nine descriptive papers:
Paper A: Indian Language (300 marks, qualifying).
Paper B: English (300 marks, qualifying).
Essay (250 marks).
General Studies I-IV (250 marks each).
Two Optional Subject Papers (250 marks each).
Total Marks: 1750 (excluding qualifying papers).
Duration: 3 hours per paper.
Personality Test (Interview):
Marks: 275.
Purpose: Assess personality, communication skills, and suitability for public service.
Prelims:
Current events (national and international).
History of India and Indian National Movement.
Indian and World Geography.
Indian Polity and Governance.
Economic and Social Development.
Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change.
General Science.
Mains:
Essay writing.
General Studies:
Paper I: Indian Heritage, Culture, History, Geography.
Paper II: Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, International Relations.
Paper III: Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security.
Paper IV: Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
Optional Subjects: Choose from a list of subjects like History, Geography, Public Administration, etc
