Requirements to Become an IAS Officer

Educational Qualification: A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized  university.

Age Limit:

  • General category: 21 to 32 years.

  • OBC: 21 to 35 years.

  • SC/ST: 21 to 37 years.

  • Additional relaxation for certain categories like PwD.

Nationality: Indian citizen (or as specified for certain categories).

Number of Attempts:

  • General: 6 attempts.

  • OBC: 9 attempts.

  • SC/ST: Unlimited attempts (within the age limit).

Exam Pattern

The IAS exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has three stages:

Preliminary Exam (Prelims):

  • Two objective-type papers:

    • General Studies Paper I (200 marks).

    • General Studies Paper II (CSAT - 200 marks, qualifying with 33%).

  • Duration: 2 hours each.

  • Purpose: Screening for the Mains exam.

Main Exam (Mains):

  • Nine descriptive papers:

    • Paper A: Indian Language (300 marks, qualifying).

    • Paper B: English (300 marks, qualifying).

    • Essay (250 marks).

    • General Studies I-IV (250 marks each).

    • Two Optional Subject Papers (250 marks each).

  • Total Marks: 1750 (excluding qualifying papers).

  • Duration: 3 hours per paper.

Personality Test (Interview):

  • Marks: 275.

  • Purpose: Assess personality, communication skills, and suitability for public service.

Exam Syllabus

Prelims:

  • Current events (national and international).

  • History of India and Indian National Movement.

  • Indian and World Geography.

  • Indian Polity and Governance.

  • Economic and Social Development.

  • Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change.

  • General Science.

Mains:

  • Essay writing.

  • General Studies:

    • Paper I: Indian Heritage, Culture, History, Geography.

    • Paper II: Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, International Relations.

    • Paper III: Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security.

    • Paper IV: Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.

  • Optional Subjects: Choose from a list of subjects like History, Geography, Public Administration, etc
